Printing and Packaging Businesses Leap into New Directions
11 February 2009

Hong Kong International Printing and Packaging Fair will stage its 4th edition in AsiaWorld-Expo from 27-30 April, 2009. Co-organised by HKTDC and CIEC Exhibition Company (HK) Limited, the fair has had an enthusiastic response since its debut in 2006.

Hong Kong's printing industry continues to grow. Following two years of growth in 2006 and 2007, the export of printed matters from Hong Kong reached HKD 18.43 billion for the first eleven months of 2008, an increase of 5% over the same period last year.

The printing industry in the Chinese mainland, too, has seen healthy growth, with the mainland now regarded as the world's third largest printing hub. From 1979 to 2007, output value increased ninety-fold, from RMB 4.8 billion to RMB 440 billion.

The bulk of Hong Kong's packing materials is exported to the Chinese mainland, amounting to 56% of the total for the first eleven months in 2008. Plastic plates, sheets, films, foils and strips contributed the biggest portion at 42%.

The packaging businesses in the Chinese mainland have state-of-the-art technology and equipment which meet the international demand for quality packaging at low cost. As the Chinese mainland is one of the world's most important production centres, there is high domestic demand as manufactured goods require printing of labels, manuals and advertising materials to enhance product/brand image and promotion.

There is a trend to environmental sustainability in the printing and packaging industries, meeting increasing world demand for environmentally friendly supplies. Use of recycled materials is also being adopted by industry players to control waste. For example, many printing companies are using Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper while the packaging industry is turning to bio-degradable plastic bottles, reusable bags, recyclable boxes, Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Polystyrene (PS) materials.

Cutting-edge technology also drives innovation in printing and packaging processes and materials. Filmless technology, computer-to-plate (CTP) and digital printing improve speed and accuracy. Transparent inks and flavoured inks are also offered to specialised market segments. Aseptic food packaging is gaining mainstream acceptance for its convenience and hygiene benefits. Advancements in packaging automation streamline production and increase efficiency.

Since its debut event, the fair has attracted a large number of quality exhibitors from the Chinese mainland. There were 255 Chinese exhibitors last year and the trend of increasing co-operation between Chinese enterprises and international enterprises reflects the rising service level of the mainland enterprises.

This year, the Integrated Pre-press Service Square features the latest and most creative expertise in the printing industry, while the Packaging Zone emphasises new ideas in packaging of gifts, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food.

In addition, the Hong Kong International Printing and Packaging Fair is a good platform for making contacts and keeping participants abreast of the latest industry trends and new technologies in these complementary industries.
